Bugatti’s founder’s father intended that he follow a conventional technical apprenticeship with Milanese tri-/quadricycle manufacturers. But he quickly realized that he is interested in motor-vehicle construction. In 1898, Ettore Bugatti constructed his Bugatti Type 1 with Prinetti & Stucchi.

Later on, Bugatti developed a second prototype named Type 2. This prototype was a prize-winning exhibit at the Milan Trade Fair in 1901. At that time, his design caught the eye of Baron Adrien de Turckheim. He offered Bugatti the opportunity to come and design automobiles at his car factory in Niederbronn.

After the Franco-Prussian War, De Dietrich was left with two car factories in two different countries. However, the Niederbronn plant was relocated to Alsace. It has been a part of Germany since 1871. While working with De Dietrich, Bugatti met Emile Mathis. They two first became friends and then business partners. They together left De Dietrich to produce automobiles of their own with the name Mathis-Hermes.

After a while, Bugatti set up a research center at Illkrich-Graffenstaden. Over here, he produced several prototypes collaborating with the Deutz company. Later on, in 1907, Bugatti was appointed as the production director of Deutz.

The founder of Bugatti got married to Barbara Maria Giuseppina Mascherpa in 1907. The couple together has two daughters named L’Ebe and Lidia. They also have two sons named Jean and Roland. In 1944, Barbara died. So, Bugatti got married again to Genevieve Marguerite Deleuze. The couple together has a daughter named Therese and a son Michel.
