Deborah Jones and Gail Davis said that both of them were whipped with an electrical cord and beaten with a karate baton. Deborah was once given the Swahili title of an African queen.

The founder of Kwanzaa has been awarded two doctorates, one in Political Science and one in Social Ethics. He even chairs the Africana Studies Department at California State University, Long  Beach.

Ron is the 14th child and seventh son in the Karenga family. His father was a tenant farmer as well as a Baptist minister. He used to employ the family to work fields under an effective sharecropping arrangement. Later on, in 1959, Ron moved to Los Angeles joining his older brother who was a teacher there.

Ron took an interest in African studies. In fact, he was also elected as LACC’s first African-American student president. After earning his associate degree, he studied Swahili, Arabic, and other African-related subjects. During this period, he took the name Maulana Karenga.
