Sean Rad was born on 22 May 1986 in Los Angeles, California to an Iranian Jewish family. His parents immigrated from Iran in the 1970s and he has a large family of 12 aunts and uncles and 42 cousins. Rad attended private school, and during high school, he formed a band and worked as an entertainment manager. At the age of 18, he enrolled at the University of Southern California in 2004.

The founder of Tinder married his longtime partner Lizzie Grover in 2018 in a ceremony at their Montecito home. Sean and Grover-Rad are art collectors and were inducted into Cultured Young Collectors 2020, recognizing their art collection as a disruptive place.  

He launched his first company, Orgoo, in 2004, an integrated messaging and video communications platform. Rad took advantage of the University of Southern California’s network of computer science students to help build the Orgoo technology.  

He founded Ad.ly, a celebrity endorsement platform that connected celebrities with brands in 2009. Rad joined startup incubator Hatch Labs in 2012 to create a next-generation, app-based, customer loyalty rewards program in Cardiff. Rad and his team officially launched Tinder in September 2012. 

Previous Tinder dating apps were designed for mobile interfaces and used photo-centric profiles that were easily navigated with intuitive swiping movements. Sean has been in the service as CEO of Tinder from 2012 to March 2015 and again from August 2015 to December 2016. 

Rad left Tinder in 2017 over an RSU valuation dispute, and in 2018 he filed a $2 billion lawsuit against Tinder’s parent company, IAC. Rad and Claire Schmidt co-founded AllVoices in 2018. AllVoices is an app that allows employees to report harassment, ethics, compliance, and other workplace-related issues directly to a company’s board.   

The founder of Tinder’s net worth is more than $3 billion approximately in 2022. Tinder is estimated to be worth $5 billion in 2022 and is among the top-class dating apps.
