About The Founder Of Zionism
Theodor was born in the Jewish quarter of Pest, Kingdom of Hungary to a Neolong Jewish family. His father’s family migrated from Zimony to Bohemia in 1739. Here, they were asked to Germanize their family name Loebl to Herzl. Theodor parents were Jeanette and Jakob Herzl who were German-speaking assimilated Jews.
It is believed that Herzl was of both Ashkenazi and Sephardic lineage through his paternal line and maternal line. Theodor’s father was a highly successful businessman. Herzel had one sister Pauline who was a year older than him. Unfortunately, Pauline died in 1878 due to typhus. Theodor used to live with his family in a house next to the Dohany Street Synagogue located in Belvaros.
Zionism’s founder devoted himself to journalism and literature. He used to work as a journalist for a Viennese newspaper and a correspondent for Neue Freie Presse in Paris. Theodor later became a literary editor and wrote several comedies and dramas for the Viennese stage. Earlier, his work did not focus on Jewish life.
In 1889, Theodor got married to Julie Naschauer who was the daughter of a wealthy Jewish businessman in Vienna. Even though this was an unhappy marriage, the couple had three children; Paulina, Hans, and Margaritha. It was found that Herzl infected his wife with Gonorrhea as he had a strong attachment to his mother. Herzl’s daughter Paulina suffered from mental illness and drug addiction. She died at the age of 40 due to a heroin overdose.
Theodor died of cardiac sclerosis before Israel’s establishment. After Herzl’s death, his son Hans became a Baptist and then a Catholic. In Hebrew, he is known as Chozeh HaMedinah; “Visionary of the State”. You must be surprised to know that Herzl is specifically mentioned in the Israeli Declaration of Independence. He is also officially referred to as the spiritual father of the Jewish State. This means the visionary who gave a concrete, practicable platform and framework to political Zionism.
However, Theodor was not the first Zionist activist or scholar. Famous Zionists like Chaim Weizmann and Nahum Sokolow also played important roles in obtaining the Balfour Declaration. ‘
