David was born in Arbroath, Scotland and then moved to Detroit along with his family. He left the school in 1869 and worked for a company that made plumbing goods. Later, the company ran into trouble in 1882. During this time, Buick began to show his promise as an investor, producing many innovations including a lawn sprinkler. He even introduced a method for permanently coating cast iron with vitreous enamel at a low cost. Cast iron baths are uncommon these days but this method is still in use for enameling them.

In the 1890s, Buick developed an interest in internal combustion engines and started experimenting with them. As he was spending little time in the plumbing business, his business partners became impatient with him. However, this partnership was dissolved and the company was sold.

Buick set up a new company “Buick Auto-Vim and Power” as he now had the time and capital to work on engines full-time. The main purpose of launching this company was to market engines for agricultural use. However, Buick soon turned to the development of a complete car along with an engine. 

In the early 1902s, Buick established the Buick Manufacturing Company with the objective of marketing engines to other car companies. Buick concentrated on the development of the production of a Value-in-Head overhead valve engine. This method of engine construction helped to produce a much more powerful engine than the rival side valve engine design. In 1903, Buick was forced to raise more money via a loan from a friend. With this financial help, Buick formed the Buick Motor Company which eventually become the cornerstone of the General Motors empire.

In an interview, Buick admitted that he was completely broken and unable to even afford a telephone. He worked as an instructor at the Detroit School of Trades at that time. Unfortunately, he died of colon cancer on March 5, 1929, at the age of 74. His body was buried at Woodmere Cemetery in Detroit, Michigan.
